While there are animal shelters for both dogs and cats, and while some zoos or sanctuaries will accept stray and or injured wild animals, there seems to be no equivilency in the world of birds. It is for this reason that various bird clubs have been created, of which the Parrot Fanciers Club to which I belong is one. We have established the first bird sanctuary on Long Island in Lindenhurst. We routinely accept stray, unwanted, or injured birds and give and or find them loving homes. Our mission is to raise money using a variety of methologies to accomplish our goals.

At feathered family we care for a small number of unwanted, homeless, or behavioraly challanged parrots at a time. Our mission to to help educate people in the proper care and commitment for parrots, and promote adoption in place of breeding. Surrendering a bird to us requrires signing a contract, and the owner will not be able to track the bird once it is rehomed. Our adoption proccess is long, and we require a lot more than a simple contract. Each bird that we have placed has remained in that home, and we offer follow up support for our lifetime to help be sure that the bird does not end up in yet another home. We are located in Colorado, and only adopt in Colorado, we do not ship birds ever. The website also has a species index, forums, parrot care info, and much more for the parrot owner.

It is the Parrot Haven's policy that no bird will be turned away. There can be many costs associated with caring for all these birds. This would include lab and veterinary fees, cages, food, medical supplies, medication and toys, to name a few items. Sanctuarius is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation licensed by the State of Colorado as an exotic bird rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and educational organization. Sanctuarius is devoted to the education of the general public in relation to exotic birds, their care, and their mental and physical well-being. The Dog Project is the beginning of the end of the need to kill millions of healthy dogs in the United States each year because there are too many dogs and not enough good homes for them. Our practical programs will gradually decrease the number of dog births and increase the number of adoptions of shelter dogs. The Dog Project is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt group of volunteers of all ages which began by helping to make the Town of North Hempstead a model community for how dogs should be treated.
