HERBERT CAME IN LAST WEEK AFTER BEING GIVEN UP BY HIS CRITICALLY ILL OWNER WHO HAS HAD HIM OVER 10 YEARS. HERBERT HAS CATARACTS AND IS UNABLE TO SEE AT ALL. HE'S HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY ADJUSTING TO HIS NEW CAGE AND IT'S SO SAD TO SEE HIM FUMBLING AROUND. HE'S VERY SCARED AT THIS POINT, BUT I THINK I FINALLY HAVE HIM IN A SITUATION THAT HE'LL BE COMFORTABLE IN. HE'LL BE GOING TO SEE DR. HEIDI HOEFER FOR A CHECK UP NEXT WEEK, THEN OFF TO THE EYE SURGEON FOR AN EVALUATION.

Update 12/21/04

HERBERT HAD HIS PRESURGICAL CONSULT WITH HEIDI HOEFER, HIS PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN, OF WEST HILLS ANIMAL HOSPITAL

OPTHAMOLOGIST, DR JOHN SAPIENZA, OF THE LONG ISLAND VETERINARY SPECIALISTS, EXAMINED HERBERTS EYES & STATED THAT HERBERT HAS A 95% CHANCE OF REGAINING HIS SITE AFTER HAVING HIS CATARACT IN JANUARY. MANY THANKS TO HEIDI FOR HER COMPLIMENTARY EXAM OF HERBERT, ALONG WITH THANKS TO DR. SAPIENZA FOR OFFERING HERBERT'S SURGERY AT A TREMENDOUS DISCOUNT.

HERBERT HAD A PRESURGICAL VISIT WITH HEIDI TODAY. HE WAS SO GOOD AND BARELY FLINCHED AS SHE DREW BLOOD FOR A CBC. HEIDI AND HER ASSISTANT ARE SO GOOD WITH THE BIRDS. SINCE HERBERT SPOOKS EASILY, IT IS DIFFICULT TO PET HIM. BUT AFTER HEIDI DREW THE BLOOD, HE SNUGGLED UP TO HER CHEST. HE IS SUCH A GOOD BIRD AND I'LL BE SO GLAD WHEN HE HAS HIS SURGERY NEXT WEEK AND HOPEFULLY, WILL BE ABLE TO SEE AGAIN. MANY THANKS TO HEIDI FOR DONATING HER SERVICES TO EXAMINE HERBERT. SHE IS ALWAYS SO GOOD TO ALL THE PARROT HAVEN BIRDS.

HERBERT HAD HIS SURGERY TODAY. ONLY THE RIGHT EYE COULD HAVE THE CATARACT EXTRACTED, SINCE HE HAD SOME SORT OF OBSTUCTION ON THE LEFT EYE. HE IS SEEING SHADOWS AT THIS POINT. POOR HERBERT. SUCH A GOOD BIRD AFTER LOSING HIS HOME, GOING FROM VET TO VET, NOT A CLUE AS TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN HIS LIFE. HE EVEN HAD AN NTERVIEW WITH THE DAILY NEWS AND HIS PICTURE APPEARED IN A TWO PAGE PHOTO IN THE JANUARY 9TH EDITION.

HERBERT HAD HIS FIRST POST OP VISIT. HE'S RECUPERATING WELL. HE ACCEPTS HIS EYE DROPS SOMEWHAT WILLINGLY TWICE A DAY. NOT SURE OF WHAT HIS VISION IS, BUT HE CAN DEFINITELY SEE SOMETHING. HE'S BEEN CLIMBING UP AND DOWN HIS CAGE, WANDERING ALL OVER THE LIVING ROOM. THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE DR. JOHN SAPIENZA, WHO DONATED HIS SERVICES, GIVING HERBERT A SECOND CHANCE TO SEE. WITH ALL THE BIRDS I TAKE IN AND THE EXPENSES INCURRED, DOCS GENEROSITY & EXPERTISE IS SO MUCH APPRECIATED.
